Urgh....Pc has died :/

Thu Jun 5, 2008, 9:48 AM
My PC or some of the hardware inside has finally died. Whenever I boot up, I get greeted with a black screen with various prompts, such as "Boot in Safe", "Start Windows normally" etc..

However when I select any of the options my PC just resets and comes back to the same screen. I've tried re-installing Windows XP, but the installation gets stuck, as does the recovery console. It'll get as far as "Examining 152626 MB Disk 0 on ID 0 at BUS 0 on atapi..." then it'll stay there for hours and won't go any further.

Won't be able to afford a new system if it's totally screwed :/

Currently on my extremely ancient 800mhz beast of a machine. Half the keyboard keys are almost non existant. This sucks.

Knoppix ftw! Get a tech savvy buddy to get you a copy and use it to retrieve files/format the partition before reinstalling windows.

But then again, if it is a hardware problem it may require further diagnosis.. :(. Either way, good luck :|

Your hard drive has probably failed if it hangs during that disk check and it won't boot. You can get a new hard drive for pretty cheap and I don't suggest turning it back on any more until you can take it to a shop to confirm the problem. A shame you don't live near me, I'd take care of it for ya. :)

Break the system and be free inside, to reach the goal and find peace of mind.

Yeah :(. Sucks especially since I was working on a ton of stuff. Not to mention I spent the whole day before designing and coding my portfolio.

Yeah that sounds likely. If it's the hard drive, then at least I won't have to splash out on a whole new system.

Although it's probably time I upgraded anyway :p

Yeah. I've had nothing but bad luck with Windows.

Thanks for the heads up. Hopefully I can save some files if I'm lucky. Just sucks to lose so much stuff. Guess it's my own fault for not having my stuff backed up heh.
